Neutrophils

Table of contents

Your absolute neutrophil count measures how many neutrophils, the most abundant type of white blood cell, are circulating in a set volume of your blood. It is reported as part of a complete blood count with differential and helps your clinician gauge how your immune system is responding to infection, inflammation, or medication.

What the neutrophil count measures

Neutrophils are the most common white blood cell, usually making up 40 to 70 percent of the total. They act as first responders to bacterial infection, rushing to the site, engulfing invaders, and destroying them. Because they turn over quickly, your count can shift within hours of an infection, injury, or stressful event.

What high or low levels mean

A high count, called neutrophilia, most often reflects your body fighting a bacterial infection or responding to inflammation, physical stress, smoking, recent surgery, or intense exercise. Certain medications, especially corticosteroids, can also push the number up. A low count, called neutropenia, can follow viral infections, some drug reactions, chemotherapy, or autoimmune conditions, and it can occasionally point to a bone marrow problem. Because neutrophils defend against bacteria, a low count raises your risk of infection, and a very low count can be serious. Follow up with your clinician if your result sits well outside the reference range, if it keeps trending in one direction, or if you have fever, repeated infections, or unusual fatigue.

Neutrophils FAQ

What does it mean if my neutrophils are high?

High neutrophils usually mean your immune system is responding to a bacterial infection or inflammation. Stress, smoking, pregnancy, recent exercise, and steroid medications can also raise the count, so your clinician interprets it alongside your symptoms.

Is a low neutrophil count dangerous?

A mildly low count is often harmless and temporary, sometimes following a viral illness. A very low count, called severe neutropenia, reduces your ability to fight bacteria and needs prompt medical attention, especially if you develop a fever.

Can I raise my neutrophils naturally?

There is no proven food or supplement that reliably raises neutrophils. Treatment targets the underlying cause, so managing infection, adjusting medications, or addressing a marrow issue with your clinician is the practical path.
